Håkan Westerblad

Professor i cellulär muskelfysiologi vid institutionen för fysiologi och farmakologi.
Håkan Westerblad är född 1956 i Solna. Han läste medicin vid Karolinska Institutet och tog läkarexamen 1984. Han började sedan forska inom fysiologi och disputerade 1989 på en avhandling om muskeltrötthet. Under åren 1990-1992 gjorde Håkan Westerblad en post doc vid University of Sydney i Australien, återvände sedan till Karolinska Institutet, där han blev docent i fysiologi 1993.
Håkan Westerblad har därefter fortsatt att forska på funktionen hos framför allt skelettmuskulatur. Han har innehaft tjänster som forskarassistent och forskare vid institutionen för fysiologi och farmakologi, inkluderande en forskartjänst på Vetenskapsrådet 2002‒2008. Vid sidan av forskningen deltar Håkan Westerblad i grundutbildningen av studenter på ett flertal utbildningsprogram och är vikarierande studierektor på forskarutbildningen vid institutionen.
Håkan Westerblad utnämndes den 1 september 2003 till professor i cellulär muskelfysiologi vid Karolinska Institutet. Han har också blivit utnämnd hedersdoktor vid Lithuanian Sports University.
Forskningsbeskrivning
En central del i vår forskning är studier av cellulära orsaker till att skelettmuskler blir svagare och långsammare vid uttröttning. Med utgångspunkt från dessa studier undersöker vi även grundläggande mekanismer för hur muskelceller anpassar sig till träning och därmed blir mer uthålliga eller starkare.
Vi studerar även motsatsen, dvs varför muskler blir svagare och mindre uthålliga vid olika sjukdomstillstånd, t ex mitokondriella myopatier. En stor del vår forskning kretsar kring det komplexa samspelet mellan kraftproduktion, cellulär Ca2+-hantering, mitokondriefunktion och fria radikaler (reactive oxygen/nitrogen species).
